about
In a remarkable synthesis of abstract mathematical concepts and intense sonic textures, composer and curator Eric Schmid releases his latest album, Finitely Generated Abelian Groups + HNW. This creative project synthesizes the rigid structures of mathematical groups with the chaotic beauty of harsh noise wall (HNW), offering an auditory experience that challenges the boundaries of electronic music and sound art.
Drawing inspiration from Gilles Chatelet's exploration of space and mathematics as detailed in Figuring Space, Schmid has created a unique step sequencer in the SuperCollider programming environment that cyclically cycles through all elements of each finitely generated abelian group by continuously adding generators to themselves. This process not only defines the progression of sounds within each piece but also metaphorically reflects the philosophical inquiry into the nature of space and reality, emphasizing the importance of diagrammatic and manual representations of space over mere theoretical formulations .
Schmid's album uses harsh noise wall (HNW), a subgenre of noise music characterized by its monolithic soundscapes, to represent the impenetrable yet endlessly fascinating complexities of mathematical abstractions. The juxtaposition of structured mathematical processes with the raw, unrefined power of noise music creates a sonic palette that is both intellectually invigorating and viscerally overwhelming.
Finitely Generated Abelian Groups + HNW is a philosophical statement, an exploration of the interface between the theoretical underpinnings of mathematics and the expansive potential of sound. Eric Schmid invites listeners to experience the beauty of complexity through the medium of extreme sound, offering an immersive experience that resonates with the thematic essence of Chatelet's influential works on the philosophy of mathematics and science.
